How to Get Your Home Ready for Thanksgiving Guests

A four-week plan to get the house, the guest room and the table ready without a last-minute scramble.

Hosting goes better when the work is spread out. Here is a simple four-week countdown, with the heavy lifting early and the last days left for cooking and enjoying company.

Four weeks out

  • Set the guest list and confirm who is staying overnight.
  • Declutter entry, living and dining areas, and the guest room.
  • Plan the menu and note what can be made ahead.
  • Check your equipment: serving dishes, extra chairs, folding table and enough plates and glasses.

Three weeks out

  • Deep clean the rooms guests will use most: bathrooms, kitchen and living room.
  • Wash or refresh bedding, and make sure guest towels are ready.
  • Order the turkey or confirm your pickup, and if you buy a frozen bird, plan thawing time. Check the package for safe thawing guidance.

Two weeks out

  • Shop for non-perishables, drinks and décor.
  • Set up the guest room with a lamp, a phone charger, extra blankets and a few small comforts.
  • Make space in the fridge and freezer.

One week out

  • Finalize the shopping list and buy perishables a few days before.
  • Make ahead: cranberry sauce, pie dough and soups freeze or keep well.
  • Set the table the night before, or earlier if you have space. Use what you own, with a runner, candles and a seasonal centerpiece.

The day before

  • Do a final tidy and empty the trash and recycling.
  • Prep vegetables, and chill drinks.
  • Plan the day's timeline on paper, working backward from the time you want to eat.

The day itself

Stay flexible, and accept offers of help. Give guests a job like pouring drinks or carving. A warm welcome matters more than a flawless table.

Little touches that help

A basket of slippers, a small bowl of snacks near the entry and a clean, empty spot for coats make guests feel considered.
